Don Walker Returns with New Album Love Songs and National Tour
Australian songwriting icon Don Walker will release his fifth solo album, Love Songs, on August 7, before taking the new record on the road for a five-date national tour this October.
Best known as the chief songwriter for Cold Chisel, Walker has spent decades chronicling Australian life through songs that balance grit, poetry and unforgettable characters. Across his solo work, collaborations with Tex, Don & Charlie and Catfish, he’s established himself as one of the country’s most distinctive musical voices.
If early indications are anything to go by, Love Songs could stand alongside his finest work.
The album’s first single, ‘Let’s All Get Together’, is available now, offering a taste of a record that moves between intimate piano ballads and richly textured arrangements featuring guitars, pedal steel, horns and layered harmonies.
Among the album’s most personal moments is ‘Could You Still Be Here’, a haunting home recording Walker captured in his own basement straight to DAT around the turn of the century. Rather than sounding like an archival curiosity, it sits comfortably alongside the album’s more recent studio recordings, reinforcing the timeless quality of Walker’s songwriting.
The album features an impressive lineup of musicians, including Shannon Bourne, Garrett Costigan, Michael Vidale, Hamish Stuart, Charlie Owen and Mark Punch, while the late Roy Payne appears on two tracks recorded in 2022. Melbourne vocal collective The Harmonettes provide backing vocals throughout the record, with a brass section adding extra punch to opening track ‘Let’s All Get Together’.
Following the album’s release, Walker will embark on the Love Songs Tour, beginning at Melbourne’s Memo Music Hall on October 16 before heading to Geelong, Sydney, Eumundi and Brisbane’s Old Museum.
Joining Walker on all dates will be acclaimed singer-songwriter Jimmy Dowling, whose blend of folk, jazz and lyrical storytelling has earned him a devoted following.
More than 50 years after he first emerged as one of Australian rock’s defining writers, Walker continues to prove that great songwriting isn’t about chasing trends—it’s about telling stories that stand the test of time.
